On October 16th hundreds of organizations from around the world marked the "World Food Day". The Food and Agricultural Organization of the UN holds that "at a time when the global economic crisis dominates the news, the world needs to be reminded that not everyone works in offices and factories. The crisis is stalking the small-scale farms and rural areas of the world, where 70 percent of the world's hungry live and work".
On the occasion of the World Food Day, KKĠ formally launched the "Kieku l-Ikel Jitkellem" (if food could speak) campaign. The launch took place at St. James Cavalier, Valletta (2pm) and got various media coverage.
Through this campaign, several NGOs, cooperatives and political organizations shall be shedding light on several issues relating to food security and scarcity such as:
- Right and access to food
- Food market in a globalised world
- The food chain
- Production of raw materials such as coffee, cocoa, etc...
- Food Subsidies
- Women's situation in areas where food is scarce
- Food and Intercultural Education
- GMOs, Protection of Biodiversity and Access to Seeds
