Producers
ATC - Nicaragua: Associacion de Trabajadores del Campo (ATC) is a Sandinista trade union of Nicaraguan farmers engaged in sesame production. Sesame is grown on the land (former banana plantations) which was cleared to make way for sesame cultivation. More than 100 people work in the project (mostly retired and unemployed people) and have the chance to earn decent wages and improve their living conditions. ATC is promoting women’s employment through special awareness raising sessions on gender issues and literacy classes. All interventions are implemented by a group of women trained by ATC.
Otisa Sugar Mill - Paraguay: Otisa is a private company located in a particularly poor area, which is situated 70 km from Asuncion. Its main goal is to provide access to market to marginalised small farmers. It gathers 900 sugar cane growers that produce around 6.000 tons of organic cane sugar yearly. Two co-operatives and a committee of producers selected by the partner ATO’s receive a fair trade price surcharge for their products.
Chain traceability
Sesame seeds from Nicaragua and cane sugar from Paraguay are processed in Greece by Jannis, which is also in charge of final product packaging.
