A new association called Concord was set up earlier this year by 10 international networks and 18 national associations from the European Union member states and some candidate countries for NGOs operating in the development sector.
The combination of letters in the name comes from 'CONfederation for CO-operation of Relief and Development NGOs'.
Maltese NGOs were among the founding members of the confederation, which represents about 1,200 European NGOs.
The Maltese NGDO (Non-Governmental Development Organisation) Platform was set up in June 2000 on the initiative of Koperazzjoni Internazzjonali (Kopin), after a need was felt to bring together all NGOs operating in the development sector to work on a common front.
The eight member organisations of the Maltese NGDO Platform are the Faith and Justice Centre, Third World Group, Jesuit Refugee Service; Fair Trade Co-operative, Koperazzjoni Internazzjonali - Malta (Kopin), Moviment Graffitti, Share Foundation, and Voluntiera Lajci Missjunarji.
Membership of the Maltese platform is open to all non-profit making NGDOs independently established and located in Malta that regard international development co-operation, including development education, as an important aspect of their aims and work.
